To explore the dark universe, track the dynamic universe, and search for solar-like systems, the JUST (Jiao-tong University Spectroscopic Telescope) project plans to build a new generation 4.4-meter spectroscopic telescope in Lenghu, Qinghai. The JUST telescope will complete its infrastructure and main construction within three years. With its powerful light-gathering capability and various terminal devices, it is expected to achieve breakthrough research results in cosmic web structure and evolution, time-domain astronomy, and exoplanet search.
Meanwhile, China has already built optical imaging survey telescopes like the WFST and Mephisto, as well as high-energy space satellites such as HXMT, Einstein Probe, and SVOM. China is also advancing large-scale space and ground-based survey projects like the CSST. JUST will collaborate with large astronomical observation facilities domestically and internationally to promote cutting-edge research in cosmology, time-domain astronomy, and exoplanets.
Large observational facilities are the cornerstone of astronomical development, and the rigorous definition of scientific goals is the primary driving force behind the design and construction of new observational equipment. Currently, the main structure of the JUST telescope has been designed and is under construction, with the preliminary design of the observation terminals already in place. At this critical time, the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University will host the first JUST Science and Collaboration Conference on October 19-20, 2024. With the support of the broader astronomical community at home and abroad, the conference aims to further refine and consolidate the scientific goals of the JUST telescope, pushing the JUST project into the next phase of full-scale construction.
